Post 11: Credo

Greetings!

-Credo by Jack London, author of Call of the Wild and White Fang

As we begin our Unit on Identity and our reading of Hermann Hesse's short novel, Siddhartha, I would like you all to reflect on who you are and what you believe is important in life by writing a credo. A credo is any formal or authorized statement of beliefs, principles, or opinions that guide a person's actions. Here is an example:

I believe in the wisdom of elders,
the influence of peer pressure,
the importance of success,
the evil that exists in money,
the effectiveness of hard work,
dedication, courage, strength.
But the belief that you don't have to strive
for your goals is just outrageous.
I believe in the truth that will set you free,
I believe in love that will conquer all,
I believe in respect for others,
Courtesy, politeness, gratitude.
And I believe in the fact that tomorrow
isn't promised to you.

--- (Grade 12 student, from Rochester)

Your credos should fit the following format:

I believe in the _________________________
the____________________________________
the____________________________________
the____________________________________
the____________________________________
_______________, _______________, _________________
But (something you don't believe in, i.e. )
I believe in____________________________
I believe in____________________________
I believe in____________________________
______________, ________________, _________________
And I believe in_________________________________

Be creative, have fun, and of course, be school appropriate. Credos are to be a minimum of 80 words and are due by 3pm on Friday, 3/15/13. Be prepared to share your credos in class Monday, 3/18.

  1. I believe in the principle of bucket lists
the satisfaction of doing something that people will not do in a lifetime
the feeling that you know that you are living your life
the achievement of not taking life too seriously
the flow of blood in your veins as you
skydive ,wrestle a gator, bungee jump
But taking life too seriously is absurd
I believe in traveling the world
I believe life has to be lived to the fullest if not what is life
I believe that everyone should live each day like it is their last by snorkeling, visiting each country or learning a new language
And I believe in (what everyone says) YOLO

  2. I believe in the to do anything I want when I want
    The right to bear arms
    The corruption of many politicians
The power and trouble money brings
The harder I can work in sports,
    Basketball, football, and hockey
But that you can’t get anything with hard work
I believe there is no god
I believe we will all die
I believe that you can do anything,
Go places, get things, and go hard
And finally I believe that the Japanese will take over the world

  3. I believe in summer
The blue skies and green grass
The feeling of waking up at noon
The starry nights and bonfires with friends
The memories to be made from all the
    Parties, car rides and adventures
But sitting at home all day is a waste
I believe in short shorts with flip flops
I believe in staying up all night
I believe in soaking up all the sunshine I can
and I believe in having the time of my life.

  4. I believe in the power of love,
the strength from someone holding you,
    the feeling of pure happiness,
the way they say “ I love you,”
the belief that you can love so many people at one time,
that you only have one true love, and if you lose that love, you’re screwed.
But I do not believe in “happy ever after.”
I believe in knowing each other for a while,
I believe in being like best friends,
I believe in staring into their eyes,
seeing that love first-hand, whether it is a significant other, or a family member that you can’t live without,
And I believe in fighting for that love.

the true ability to say what you want and have your own opinion,

that we have been guaranteed what we have, own, and buy.

the only book that is inspired of God,
the wisdom and promises that are found in it,
the hope of living forever on a paradise earth, (Psalms 37:11)
seeing dead loved ones again, never getting old, no more tears,
But I don't believe in living life like there's no tomorrow,
I believe in taking life one day at a time,
I believe in enjoying what you have now,
I believe in being satisfied with what you have,
good friends, a simple life, and having a 4th generation ipod,
And I believe in standing up for what's right, even if you're standing alone.
