Post 8: Much Ado About Music

This week, you will be creating a new post.

Select at least one or two songs that you think relate to themes, characters, or conflicts in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. Provide links to the songs you pick. Explain the meaning of each song and how it relates to ideas in the play. Consider the themes of Love, Deception, and Betrayal, the situations of the two main couples (Benedick and Beatrice; Claudio and Hero), and the villainy of Don John. Be specific in your explanations.

Posts are to be at least 300-400 words and are due by 3 p.m. Friday, 2/1/13.

I chose this song because it is about love and infatuation and it kind of shows love at first site. i compare this song to when claudio first sees hero he is infatuated he wants her. and he keeps saying "i have to have her she will be mine"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LN-rtvGp5so
this song is rumors by the timex social club
i also chose this song because it talks all about rumors and how they get started by people making stuff up. this relates to the book in two different parts. one part is when benedick is in the bushes and claudio, leonato and don pedro know he is there eavesdropping so they start making stuff up on how beatrice loves him so much.

the second part where this happens is when beatrice is hiding and hero and margeret are saying o benedick loves beatrice so much he would di for her in an instant

  2. Bad to the Bone by George Thorogood

    Blind by Jason Derulo
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BODA0xHwlcA

When I think of the character Don John in the play Much Ado About Nothing, right away I think of the song Bad to the Bone by George Thorogood. Don John is the villain in the story and is definitely bad to the bone.

Don John is bad because he uses lots of deception to start trouble for other people. He doesn't want Claudio and Hero to get married and be happy. He made it look like Hero was unfaithful and impure by having it seem that she was having an affair. Don John is jealous of his brother Don Pedro's success and social status which causes him to act evil. Don Pedro a prince and Don Jon is just a bastard brother. In the song Bad to the Bone, it says " I broke a thousand hearts." Don John brakes lots of hearts in the play. He breaks Hero's heart, Claudio's heart, and Beatrice's heart.

The song Blind by Jason Derulo reminds me of the part of the play when Claudio calls Hero unfaithful. He feels that Hero has betrayed him. He said he thought when he first saw Hero that she was pure and now he thought she wasn't pure and innocent.

In the song Blind, Jason Derulo says "I gave all of my trust, didn't think being faithful was asking too much, but I'm good, glad that I Know now." That is how Claudio feels toward Hero. Claudio feels that he gave Hero his trust in being loving toward her and now she is being unfaithful. He's happy that he knows the truth now.

The song Bad to the Bone goes along with the character Don John. Don John is very bad and is a villian. He brakes people's hearts and doesn't want anyone to be happy. The song Blind goes has to do with how Claudio feels. He feels crushed, hurt, and hatred toward Hero for betraying him.

I chose the song love me by Justin Bieber. Before I say anything else, I’m not a die hard “belieber”, I only like some of his songs, but this one fits Beatrice’s and Benedick’s romance perfectly.

Beatrice and Benedick are too stubborn to just tell each other that they love each other, until almost halfway through the play. The song love me is perfect for Benedick’s point of view because the song starts out by Justin singing, “My friends say I'm a fool to think that you're the one for me.” In the beginning of the play Benedick doesn’t want to be tied down, he would rather spend time with the boys, and not have to worry about a marriage. Also the scene when Beatrice tells Benedick to kill Claudio to show his love for her, goes along with the line when Justin sings, “My heart is blind but I don't care
'Cuz when I'm with you everything has disappeared.” Benedick is blind to the fact that he is going to try and fight with his best friend because of his love for Beatrice.

The second song I chose was Rumour Has It by Adele. This song goes along with the whole theme of the play. Everyone in Massena is in everyone else’s business, and they need to mind their own. The line in the song that says, “All of these words whispered in my ear tell a story that I cannot bear to hear.” That line is perfect for when Claudio hears that Hero is having an affair with someone else, and he just doesn’t want to believe it. After Hero passes out and everyone thinks she is dead the Friar comes up with a plan to tell everyone that Hero really is dead. This goes with the chorus of the song rumour has it, ohhhhhh, because they are all going to spread the rumor that Hero is “dead.”

I picked the song Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond. It is an older song, but can really be compared to the love that Beatrice and Benedick share for each other. In the song he states that “Good times never seemed so good “this can be compared to when Beatrice and Benedick first fall in love. The two fall in love when their friends tell them that the other one loves them. Margaret and Hero talk about how much Benedick loves Beatrice while Beatrice is hiding in the garden. Don Pedro and Claudio and Leonato talk about how Beatrice is in love with Benedick while he also is hiding in the garden.

With these two groups of people talking about how Beatrice and Benedick are in love with each other they make the two of them really fall in love. This is when the song can be compared because they both say that they have never felt better. Beatrice and Benedick are in love with each other and many things they do can compare to the song. With Beatrice and Benedick falling in love it can be compared to the line “Good times never seemed so good”.

I picked the song Be Wary of a Woman by Darius Rucker. It is a good way to compare how Claudio feels when he finds out that Hero has been dishonest to him and cheated on him. In the song he sings that he is wary of a woman. Claudio is wary to marry Hero because she is dishonest. When Claudio gets to the wedding he yells and tells everyone that Hero has cheated on him. The people at the wedding including Leonato, Hero’s father can’t believe what he says about Hero not being a virgin.

Leonato has a long speech about how he would rather have her die then to have a daughter who is dishonest and not a virgin. Leonato plans to have Hero pretend to die and have Claudio feel badly. Claudio then finds out that Don John set up the whole plan. Leonato tells Claudio that he must marry his niece in the morning to make Leonato less mad. Leonato’s niece is actually Hero. This can be compared to the song because Claudio is wary of Hero that she cheated on him then he finds out it is all a lie.

  6. The song Boyfriend by Justin Bieber reminds me of Beatrice and Benadic because Benadic is proving to Beatrice how he is a great guy and how if she would give him a chance he would treat her very good and says how he would never let her go which is a part in the song.

The Song I love the way you lie by Eminem ft. Rhianna is a good song for Claudio and how he feels about Hero when he thinks she is lying and cheated on him he feel hurt and yet still loves her in a way. The song talks about the person they love lying to them and how hurt they feel because of it.

I chose "Clarity", by Zedd and Foxes. This song is more or less a break-up song, but it still pertains to Benedick and Beatrice.

"If our love is insanity, why are you my clarity?" This means that while they may be going crazy being with each other, the only time they can think or feel straight is when they're with each other.

Benedick and Beatrice are always fighting throughout the play. They are mean to each other, call each other names, but once something goes wrong they are there for each other. Even though they really can't stand each other, they still love each other through it all, no matter how much they hurt each other.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ti3t7MAwaa

"Rumor Has It", by Adele is another great song to describe "Much Ado About Nothing." Rumors are flown all over the place in this play. Rumors like Beatrice and Benedick liking each other are some-what true, but if that rumor had never happened, then Benedick and Claudio would still be friends. If people weren't so jealous of Hero and Claudio, basically this play wouldn't even exist.

"Much Ado About Nothing" is really a Shakespearean view of high school.

The first song I chose was I Love The Way You Lie by Eminem. Don't worry Mr. T, I posted the clean version. I chose this song for a couple of different reasons.

The first reason I chose I Love The Way You Lie is because there is a lot of lying in the play. Don John lies to people to cause problems between Hero and Claudio. For example, he made Claudio think that Hero was having and affair with another man, but she really wasn't. Then at Claudio and Hero’s wedding Claudio thinks Hero is lying about not not having an affair.

The second reason I chose I Love The Way You Lie is because Beatrice and Benedick keep lying to each other about their feelings for each other. They act like they hate each other. So, Leonato, Claudio, and Don Pedro go where Benedick is hiding and they lie about how much Beatrice love Benedick, making Benedick believe them. Then, later Beatrice is hiding and Ursula and Hero talk about how much Benedick loves her. So, basically they’re is a lot of lying going on.

    2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WA4iX5D9Z64

The second song I chose was We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift. I chose this song because it basically describes Claudio and Hero’s on again off again relationship. For example, at their wedding Claudio says that he will never marry Hero because she was lying about having an affair. Then Claudio thinks she dies, but she really didn’t die. She and the Friar decided faking death was the way to go. At the end of the play Claudio finds out the truth and then they end up getting married. I would never marry someone after they lied to me about being dead though. In the song it says “I say, I hate you, we break up, you call me, I love you” which is basically what is happening with Claudio and Hero every two seconds.

The first song I chose was I Wont Give Up by Jason Mraz. I was listening to Pandora when I did my blog so this is how I chose this song, but i figured it could work for Much Ado About Nothing.

I could use this song because it is similar to the relationships that go on in Much Ado About Nothing. Claudio is all upset because he thinks that he is being cheated on my Hero, and he hates her. But in the end it ends up being a lie and they still end up getting married. But if Claudio gave up on Hero, he never would have found out that she was still alive and wanted to marry him. Also, it describes the relationship between Beatrice and Benedick very well. They both pretend that that hate each other and they always pick on each other, but in actually they like each other a lot. If they gave up on liking each other because the other one picked on them, they never would have found out and gotten married with Claudio and Hero.

    2.http://youtu.be/Zlv1rdcpS9M

The second song I chose was Marry You by Bruno Mars. I didn't chose this just because its my number one jam, I was still listening to Pandora... but this does fit pretty well with Much Ado About Nothing.

In Much Ado About Nothing, Benedick and Beatrice get married even though they haven't been together very long at all. Claudio and Hero were in love but when he found out that she supposedly cheated on him, he lost his feelings for her. As soon as he found out that she was still alive, his feelings changed again and they got married.

Both songs that I chose fit with Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. Basically their relationships were inconsistent and very rushed.

I chose the song Kiss You by One Direction. I didn't only choose this song because I love One Direction.

This song relates to both Claudio and Hero, and Benedick and Beatrice.
Kiss You relates to Hero and Claudio the most because it says if you don't wanna take it slow and you just wanna take me home. All the relationships, in Much Ado About Nothing, are so fast paced and no relationships are ever slow. Hero falls in love with Claudio instantly, as soon as they see each other they want to get married. It is insane.
It relates to Bendeick and Beatrice because at the end all they do is kiss each other. Before they kiss each other at the end they have the scene where Beatrice tells Benedick to kill Claudio. Benedick said let me seal our love with a kiss.

The second song i chose was When I was Your Man by Bruno Mars (not a One Direction song surprising i know :P). I chose this song because it represents the guilt that Leonato and and his brother put on Claudio.

The song is basically a song about guilt. In the song it also talks about selfishness. In the case of Much Ado About Nothing Claudio has the shame and the guilt of not doing more things for Hero before he shamed her, and she died. The song also represents when Leonato told Claudio that he could be forgiven by marrying his “niece” (Hero) and Claudio took up the offer because he felt bad, and he wanted to be forgiven. In the song it always says stuff about apologizing. That is also what represents Claudio. When I was Your Man represents Claudio all the way.

  11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBI3lc18k8Q - Whatcha Say
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8v_4O44sfjM - Jar of Hearts

When I think of the part in Much Ado About Nothing where Claudio accuses Hero of being unfaithful to him, I think of the song Whatcha say, by Jason Derulo. Claudio thought that Hero was so innocent, but when he heard that Hero was cheating on him he completely felt betrayed by her.

In the song, Jason Derulo says “...When I don't really want no one else. So, no.. I know I should have treated you better, but me and you were meant to last forever.” This makes me think of Hero. I feel as though if this song were to be in Much Ado About Nothing, Hero would be singing it to Claudio. Even though she didn’t actually cheat on him, it just reminds me of that song.

Also, this song relates to Claudio and Hero’s relationship when Jason Derulo says “Cause when the roof caved in and the truth came out. I just didn't know what to do. But when I become a star we'll be living so large. I'll do anything for you..So baby watcha say?” This makes me think of Claudio finding out about Hero faking her death. The truth obviously had to eventually come out about Hero not being dead, and when it did, Hero probably felt awkward and didn’t know what to do.

Another song I think fits with the story, is Jar of Hearts, by Christina Perri. The title alone represents what the song is about. In the song Christina says “Who do you think you are? Collecting your Jar of Hearts, and tearing love apart?” Don Pedro is a liar and a deceiver in Much Ado About Nothing. He lies to people and tears love apart, just like the song says.

I think both the song Whatcha Say and Jar of Hearts both fit with the story Much Ado About Nothing because both of the songs have to do with love deceiving and lies. Most relationships in Shakespeare’s writing come down to lies and people being deceived. He was most definitely cheating on when he was alive.

I chose the song Smooth Criminal played on cellos, as I feel it relates to the story Much Ado About Nothing rather well. The rhythm of the cellos feel like they relate to deception heavily. Also, since it has no lyrics while played on the cellos, it is much more applicable to the story, where as if it had lyrics then it would be more strange and less relate-able to the story. The song's deception makes me think of Don Pedro, being the ominous villain that lurks in the shadows, but never attacks directly. He waits patiently, waiting for his plan to unfold, as the deception slowly works its way into the minds of his victims. In my opinion, he acts very much like a smooth criminal. The song also speaks to me of the betrayal Claudio feels when he thinks he sees Hero with another man, as well as Hero's anguish when she is falsely accused of being unfaithful. This song in my eyes definitely summarizes many of the negative and deceptive moments, in such a way that does not require words. I though a song without lyrics would be best for this, as those kinds of songs are more easy to apply to other things, for example this book. As well, lyric-less songs let you draw your own conclusions as well. A song with lyrics can give a similar vibe or feeling to different people, but a song with no lyrics can give a different feeling to many different people. But I digress, this song reminds me of many themes in Much Ado About Nothing, for example how deception can be a powerful thing that allows you to control people to your liking, but can also be easily unraveled and found out, so you have to be careful. As I like to say, the best of liars seldom lie. ~Jared

The song I choose is Rumor Has It by Adele. I choose this song because it shows the deception used in this novel to deceive Benedick and Beatrice to fall in love. This also relates to the false rumors told about Hero's unfaithfulness to Claudio. They told rumors that it was Hero being unfaithful in the window.

In this song it talks about how much she is hurt about someone doing something to her. This relates to the story because Claudio is upset about rumors, and it pretty much ruins his reputation/life.

The second song is Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson. This song reminds me of Don John being a criminal and tricking everyone to try to get back at his brother, Don Pedro. Even though this song talks about murder, it is talking about smooth criminals. Don John was a villain. He deceived a lot of people, and then fled from Messina. Don John was not a smooth as he thought though because he was caught on his way out of Messina.

These songs are great examples that relate to the characters and plot in Much Ado About Nothing. Rumor Has It shows an examples of the rumors told to get Beatrice and Benedick to fall in love with each other, even though they were probably in love from the start the rumors just made them realize it. The song Smooth Criminal shows example of the antagonist in the book, Don John. Don John just tried to stir up drama and get under his brothers skin. He was a criminal from the start and he was also a coward. He fled from Messina because he did not want to do the time for the crime.

I chose to use the song Should've Said No by Taylor Swift. This song relates to how Claudio feels about Hero once he finds out that she has cheated on him, and she is unfaithful.

Claudio feelings of hatered against Hero started when he stood at the bottom of her window and heard Borochio and Margaret talking. He assumed that it was Hero and another man. He than thought that she was cheating on him.

On the day of their wedding Hero got her dress on and got ready. When she walked in to get married Claudio shamed her in front of everyone and told her she was unfaithful. She did not understand. After getting yelled at and shamed, she fainted. Beatatrice tried helping her. Claudio then found it wasn't true when Borochio confessed that it was Margaret not Hero, and it was Don John's idea.

This song relates to play because of how Claudio feels about Hero before he finds out the truth. He thought that she should've thought before making her mistake and cheating on him.

I chose the song Reasons by Hoobastank. This song relates to how Benedict feels about Beatrice.

In this song it talks about how he's not a perfect person, and that he's never meant the things he said to her. It also talks about how she is the reason he found to change who he used to be.

I think both of the songs

This song relates to Benedict and Beatrice because even though they fight a lot, they still like each other and he was willing to change how he acted, how he looked, and even his opinion on marriage for her.

I also chose the song Chalk outline by Three Days Grace http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMsRVBhG14k

I chose this song because I thought that it related to Hero and Claudio. I thought it related most to hero because it talks about being betrayed, and how he will be sorry for leaving her. And that he left her "dead."

I think both of these songs relate to the plot of Much Ado Nothing

  16. The two songs I chose that could compare to Much Ado About Nothing are “ Let me love you” by Ne-Yo and “ Just can’t get enough” by the Black Eyed Peas.

"Let me love you" is about a guy who obviously is telling a girl to let him love her. He says "girl let me love you, and I will love you until you learn to love yourself." This can be considered as Benedick towards Beatrice because she tells him she will only love him if he challenges Claudio.

The song that compares to Hero and Claudio is "just can’t get enough." This chorus is basically "I’m addicted and I just can’t get enough." This is like Claudio because he keeps going back after he keeps changing his mind about her due to rumors and people tricking him. He also barley knows her. It also compares to Hero because she keeps going back to Claudio after he changes his mind about her a lot of times. She also runs back to him after he publicly embarresses her, basically calls her an adulterous woman, and pushed her in front of her family and friends. He even made her faint and have to fake her death because she would be a disgrace to her family. With all of that she still married him with no hesitation.

The relationships in this play have many similarities that can compare to songs we listen to today. The similarities that are included in the song and the play are; Beatrice needs to let Benedict love her and hero and Claudio can't get enough of each other.

  17. A song that I can choose that could fit with Much Ado About Nothing would be Lost in the Echo by Linkin Park.
This song is about a person who has hurt someone close to them and wishing they can take everything back and make things right. This song matches the relationship between Hero and Claudio, for example Hero and Claudio in the beginning of the story would do anything for each other, but during the climax Claudio falsely accused Hero of being unfaithful.
Claudio is someone who can easily be deceived and talked out of things. In Don John's first attempt of breaking them up, he tells Claudio that Don Pedro is trying to take Hero from him, and Claudio gives up on Hero. After regaining hope he feels bad about mistaking Hero. Also during Don Johns second plot makes Hero pass out and then he tells them that she is dead.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdxL2IyTfPc Adorn

The first song I choose was It’s Time by Imagine the Dragon. In the song, it states, “The path to Heaven runs through miles of clouded Hell”, which describes Hero’s struggle to prove to Claudio that she was never unfaithful to him. I’m the girl pretended to die, only to have the truth come spewing out of Borachio’s mouth after he was caught by Dogberry. Those lyrics could also be used to describe Benedick and Beatrice. The two were forced together because they were too stubborn to admit their love. So in a way you could say that they went through their own hell, which consisted of teasing and a lot of eavesdropping, and hiding in gardens, probably not the most reliable way of finding out that someone’s in love with you, but it worked for them, but anyway.

The second song that I choose was Adorn by Miguel. I choose this song because it is pretty much about how a guy loves a girl so much the he’d do anything for her, even fight for her. The lyrics, “These fist will always protect ya” describe Benedick’s attitude after Hero is shamed. Benedick promises to fight Claudio to the death, to defend Beatrices’ kins-woman. Benedick promises this even though Claudio is pretty much his best friend. This song also describes the love that Benedick’s love for Beatrice, and probably was the love song that Benedick was trying to write for Beatrice. This could also apply to Claudio and Hero’s love for each other at the very beginning of the play.
