Post 7: The Feats of a Lion

In Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, a messenger declares that the young soldier, Claudio, has done "in the figure of a lamb, the feats of a lion" (Act 1 Scene 1). Write a blog about a young person who has accomplished much in his or her life who you personally admire (musicians, actors, actresses, fellow students, etc.). Address the six central questions to a news story (Who? What? Where? When? How? Why?). Be descriptive by providing specific information. Provide links to any sources you use.

Responses are to be at least 300 words, and are due by Friday, 1/11/13.

  1. There are two young people that I admire, one is a boy named Cayden Long and his older brother Connor Long. Cayden has one major health disability, he has Cerebral Palsy. This disease is caused by a group of non-progressive, non-contagious motor conditions that cause physical disability in human development mainly in the various areas of body movement. Cayden who can’t talk or walk is confined to a wheelchair. Connor wanted to help his brother experience sports like other children his age.

The two boys entered their first ever triathlon in June 2011 located in Nashville, Tennessee. Connor pushed and pulled his younger brother throughout the 2.5 mile course. The boys finished second to last but the brothers did not care because they were able to do it together. Connor stated that finishing the race was what mattered to him and making sure his brother enjoyed it. In the summer of 2012 the brothers entered the first annual New England Kids Triathlon in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They have competed in several triathlons over the last two years, inspiring everyone along the way.

I find this awesome because you see a nine-year old showing his love for his brother with health problems. Connor takes charge by finding triathlons that he and his brother can compete in. Connor has a special stroller to push his brother in while running, a special cart to pull his brother while biking, and a special raft to carry his brother in while swimming. Cayden is thrilled by this, expressing it in ways like smiling and laughing, due to his inability to speak. Cerebral Palsy is a disease that can limit the person affected, to only things that can be done in a wheelchair. Connor, Cayden and their family took Cayden’s disablitiy to the next level by giving him the chance to participate in triathlons. I would hope that Connor and Cayden will inspire other people with health problems to become active with siblings and work together to achieve things that will help the pride of the person with the disability. Connor and Cayden Long were elected Sports Illustrated Kids of the Year 2012.

  2. In our world today there are so many people who have lost their jobs because of the economy and are now homeless. I know I couldn't imagine what it would be like not to have a roof over my head.

When Hannah was only five years old she saw a man eating garbage out of a dumpster, and watched a lady push all of her belongings in a grocery cart. Her mom told her that instead of feeling sad for those people, that she should try and do something to help. With the help of her parents and volunteers Hannah started the Lady Bug Foundation Inc. Hannah soon became the little face of the homeless. She spoke for them all across Canada to as many as 16,000 people at one time. I don’t know about you, but if I was only 10 I would be terrified to do that, but Hannah didn't stop. Hannah believes that everyone should have a roof over their head and enough food to eat.

I believe that if people know about homelessness – that there are people living without a home – they will want to help,” was a statement made by Hannah. The main goal of the Ladybug Foundation is to spread awareness about homelessness, and get people to help. The money goes to shelters, food for the homeless, and it also can help prevent people from going homeless all over Canada.

With Hannah’s help well over two million dollars has been raised to help people all over Canada, building shelters, and feeding the homeless. Hannah also started another foundation called the Ladybug Foundation Education which encourages kids to make change in their world.

I think that Hannah is a very inspirational girl, and that she has done so much in her life already. Wanting to help people from the time that you were five years old, well most people aren't like that. Instead of worrying about how to dress her Barbie doll, she was trying to make a different in the world.

  3. There are two people that I admire most. They are Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings. They have been gold medalists is the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympics for beach volleyball. Treanor and Jennings together are considered to be the greatest beach volleyball team of all time. Treanor retired from competitive [lay on August 8th 2012 after taking gold in the 2012 summer Olympics in London.

I admire both of these players not only because they are successful but because of there attitudes when playing and there personalities on and off the court.

Treanor is married to Dodgers current catcher Matt Treanor. Jennings married professional volleyball player Casey Jennings in 2005. She took a break after her win in Beijing to start a family, giving birth to two boys.

Both of these 3 time Olympic gold medalists have followed there dreams have been very successful at having a family too. Jennings was 11 weeks pregnant when she and Treanor won there last gold medal at the 2012 summer Olympics in London. I give her a lot of credit for putting her self in that situation and sticking with her partner and go through competing in the 2012 Olympics. She put her self at risk playing but she also put her baby at risk, but she followed her dreams anyway.

These two women are very strong and put in hard work day after day to be as good as they are. They work so well together and they both knew that they had each other to count on. I admire them because that is how a team should be. You should be able to count on your teammates for anything and everything. They also have worked hard and pushed themselves to the limit to be as successful as they were.

When I get older one of my dreams is to be an outside hitter for the United States Coast Guard Academy volleyball team and work hard and push my self like Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings.

  4. I find many famous people admirable in many ways. One of the best role models for girls I believe, though, is Lady Gaga. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, is her real name but she is known by her stage name Lady Gaga. Gaga is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, activist, businesswoman, fashion designer, actress, philanthropist. She was born and raised in New York City. Aside from her weirdness and seductive behavior she is a very admirable person.

Gaga once said "In a world where girls speak every statement as a question, second guess themselves in class and have trouble saying what they are good at, it is extremely refreshing to hear a woman talk about how she knows she is awesome." I find this quote to be very true. Girls in the time and day are always worried about whether or not they are good enough. Gaga knows, though, that she is awesome. She embraces her weirdness no matter what people think of her. I find that to be very admirable. Gaga is also one of the few popular singers that writes her own songs and sings well live.

I also admire that she doesn't talk about her body when people ask about her. Unlike other celebrities who share their diet and workout tips, and how they have the “ideal” body. Her physical appearance is, and always has been, less important to her than her music.

  5. There is someone who I look up to for all her pain and suffering that she went through. Not many people know her, or even what happened to her. But for everything that she had gone through, she still made it.

Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped in 1991 in California, when she was eleven years old. She was missing for 18 years. Her kidnapper, an already convicted sex offender, was seen walking around a college with two young girls in 2009, and people found this odd and took him in for questioning. When they went to the police office, an older girl came with him and was shown to be Dugard. Garrido was the kidnapper, with the help of his wife.

Dugard's kidnapping was witnessed by several people, but she still disappeared for 18 years straight. She was held enclose in some shacks in the backyard of Garrido. He would rape her, and 3 months into her captivity, she was pregnant at 13 years old. Later, she would have another daughter, both of them were Garrido's. She was forced to tell her daughters that she wasn't their mother, but only an older sister.

So many things happened to Dugard that could have saved her. Garrido's sheds made neighbors suspicious, but the police did not follow through with any investigations. There was even an officer that met Dugard at Garrido's home, but he lied and said that it was " a brother's daughter."

When the police asked Dugard about her situation, she only said that she was hiding from an abusive husband, a sure sign of Stockholm syndrome, when the kidnapped "fall in love" with their captor, and think that they deserved whatever happened to them.

I cant' say exactly why I look up to her, maybe because she survived kidnapping, rape, and abuse, but still somehow managed to give her daughters an education and to love them, even if they were half-conceived by her rapist. After she got used to being home again, she wrote a letter to Garrido, saying how he was so wrong and that all his theories on religion and sex were wrong. I would love to be able to stick up for myself like that.

Garrido has 431 years of prison, and his wife has 36 to life.

  6. Getting in front of millions of people and performing in front of them at the age of fourteen is something i personally admire. I would be so nervous and i probably could not do it.

Liam James Payne was born on August 29th, 1993, in Wolverhampton England. Liam was born early though. A few minutes after he was born the doctors found out that Liam had only one working kidney. Liam had to get 20-39 injections every day until the age of 5. Liam is perfectly healthy now but still on has one working kidney. sAt the age of fourteen Liam auditioned on the X Factor. He made it to the judge's house then Simon Cowell (a judge on the show) told him that he was too young. Liam was heartbroken.

Two years later Liam auditioned again. Liam made it through again but this time he was paired with four other boys. All together they formed the band One Direction. The four other boys were Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson.

I admire Liam so much because I hate shots first of all, and second of all over twenty-nine of them a day, I would rather die. Pushing through his pain Liam went on to become one of Americas most loved bands and a person i admire so much (besides Harry). I also admire Liam because he is the best singer of the band ( I know I know maybe Harry is a little better). I would never have the courage to stand up in front of Simon Cowell and a million people and sing my heart out. It would be so hard and nerve-racking. With Liam having so many health problems he still follows his career and tries his best. I admire Liam James Payne so much, I wish I could meet him.

  7. There are a couple people around me that I find myself to admire them. One main person is my brother mike. He's 19 and keeps me out of trouble and shows me what's right and what's wrong.

He is a person who I can always count on for being there for me more than anybody else would. He tells me what i'm doing wrong and what I should be doing. He's probably one of the strongest people I know and that makes me look up to him even more. I couldn't imagine my life without him because I honestly don't know what I would do.

I also admire my friends. I love them all. They always know when something's going wrong and are always willing to hep. They don't take crap from anyone and that's what makes them my favorite. (:

  8. One famous person that I admire the most is Carmelo Anthony, nicknamed “Melo”. He is my favorite basketball player ever and he is on the New York Knicks. HE grew up in the Rd Hook projects. Despite all this he had a successful high school career at Towson Catholic High School and especially at Oak Hill Academy.

Carmelo Anthony attended Syracuse University for college and he led the Orangemen to their first and only National Championship in 2003. He was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award and was named the Most Valuable Player of NCAA East Regional. After playing only one successful season at Syracuse University, Anthony left college to enter the 2003 NBA Draft, where he was selected as the third overall pick by the Denver Nuggets.

In December of 2006, the Knicks and Nuggets got into a fight, where Carmelo punched a guy right in the face and knocked him down, now that guy is his teammate. He was traded to the Knicks a few days before the 2011 trade deadline. He has played for Team USA in the Olympics 3 times.

I admire him so much because even though he had nothing as a child, he ended up being one of the most successful basketball players ever in the NBA.

  9. One famous singer I admire is Luke Bryan. He is my favorits country singer. His music is so good, one of my favorite song he sings is country girl (shake it for me girl). I like him because hes a really good singer. Hes tasteful (no swearing). since 2010 hes been nominated or won many awards including american country awards in 2012 the award was album of the year tailgates and tanlines.

His songs have a good beat and rhythm that are easy to dance to. His songs are catchy and fun to sing along to. When you first hear his song on the radio you instantly like his music and wanna listen to him on the radio and download his music to your phone or ipod. My favorite all time song from Luke Bryan is I don't want this night to end he sings about how he didn't want the night to end because he was hanging out with a girl he liked. Another one of my favorite song is All my friends say its about how he got drunk because he was shooting doubles when he saw his ex girlfriend with another guy and he didn't know where his truck was and he was in the front lawn sleeping and he didn't know how he got back home from the club. Another favorite songs is Country Man its about how you need a country mad instead of a city guy because a country man is stronger and tougher than a city guy.

Another one of my favorite song is You Dont Know Jack its about how this guy asked for a dollar to buy another drink at the bar and he said go get a job and the guy said you dont know jack about me that he couldn't see his little girl because him and his wife weren't together and he misses them and he wants to go back to them.

  11. There are many young people on this planet who should be acknowledge and admired for their help in society. Being young, you feel like there’s nothing you can do and no one will listen. Not many, but some brave people have stepped up and done something for the world, including Brad Pitt, Beyonce and much more including one celebrity who’s gone but not forgotten, Michael Jackson.

Michael Jackson started his career young with his family and moved up to be one of the most well known celebrities to this day. Even though towards the end of his career people only recognized him for things he was accused for, he’s helped numerous charities and people in need.

Michael started early on in his childhood but he boomed in his late teens. He spent it on a couple dozen charities he’s founded and made the Neverland Ranch. Some of the charities he helped with included Childhelp U.S.A, AIDS Project L.A., American Cancer Society, and Angel Food. Keep in mind these are just some of the many he’s helped out.

Many celebrities are a voice for the people and when all else fails, music always seems like it understands. I think Michael was a big voice for us, and his music made us feel many different types of emotions. He made us happy, sad, and back to happy. This is one of the reasons why he will never be forgotten, his music wasn’t like todays, his music lives on and couldn’t be buried in the dirt.

Michael Jackson might not be who many people consider “influential” but I consider him someone who should never be looked down upon for what he’s accomplished and the work and time he put in his life to give the world what he has. His death was shocking and one of the biggest grieving moments the world ever had, and he will always live on.

  12. The person who inspired me the most in my life was my older brother Daran. In 2004 he suffered a brain injury when he fell down a flight of stairs. He was in the hospital for a year 3 months out of that year he was in a coma. He had to go through rehabilitation. The doctors told us that he wouldn’t be able to do anything by himself again. But he proved the doctors wrong many times.

My brother was the strongest person I know. After his accident he was never able to walk the same. He never wanted people to treat as if he were disabled. He wanted to do things on his own, which he did. He graduated from BCC and transferred to Binghamton University. He passed away this summer July 3rd, he would have graduated from BU with his Bachelors degree. He always wanted to travel it was one of his favorite things. He went on a mission trip to South America and he also went to China with his school.

His favorite movie was Soul Surfer, he said he was inspired by her. I think he felt like he could relate to her because he never gave up and neither did he. He said he wanted to learn how to surf he even got a balance board so he could teach himself how to balance. A couple months before he died he went to California but we don’t know what he did down there because he didn’t tell anyone he was going. I hope that he learned how to surf, it was his dream. He also taught himself how to ride a bike again after his accident.

He taught me to always look at things in a positive perspective. And its exactly what he did. He even wrote it in one of my birthday cards. He said “Smile it, could be worse. Love your older brother Daran.” He always gave me the best advice. I will always look up to him. He always protected me like a big brother should, I was his baby sister he will always be my hero. He was the best older brother that anyone could ask for, and I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to have such a great influence in my life. ♥

  13. A young person that I admire is a person named Persis. Persis lived in Cameroon and is one of Jehovah's Witnesses. When Persis was only six years old she became an unbaptized publisher. (An unbaptized publisher is someone who isn't baptized but is on their way to baptism. An unbaptized publisher is someone that goes to the meetings, tells people about Jehovah, and wants to get baptized and serve God forever.) She had ten home Bible studies.

What Persis would do is tell people about Jehovah during recess. She would preach the whole time from the beginning of recess to the end. Because of her witnessing her mom and cousin later became unbaptized publishers. Then, when she was 10 years old she became an auxiliary pioneer. An auxiliary pioneer is someone that devotes 50 hours a month preaching, telling people about God and what he expects of people and what he will do in the near future from the Bible.

I admire Persis because she is so brave to tell her fellow classmates about God. Persis was six years old when she was witnessing and had 10 Bible studies and I’m 16, so if a little girl can do it,I can too. When I read this experience it made me want to give a thorough witness to my fellow classmates. Then, on top of witnessing to classmates, Persis auxiliary pioneered despite going to school. I would love to do that.

When you’re reading this blog, you might be wondering,‘why tell people about God?’The answer is when you know the truth about what the Bible teaches it changes your whole outlook on life. It adds meaning to your life. In fact Jesus, the greatest man that ever lived commanded his followers to tell people about God. (Matt 28:19,20)

Persis set a good example of witnessing!

  15. One the most admirable traits in a person, I think, is bravery and courage. I one of the most inspirational stories, I’ve heard, is the story of Victoria Soto. Though many people have never met her she still touches the lives of so many people.

Victoria Soto was the average twenty-seven year old teacher, just happens that she was in the wrong place at the right time, to some degree. Soto was a first grade teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. And before you start scroll past this post think that you heard the Sandy Hook story a million times, please just heard me out. Everyone remembers the date December 14, 2012 in some way or another. It started out like any other day in Newtown Connecticut, but things soon turn drastically wrong and many people had to make quick decisions. After heard gunshots in the school Soto took on the frantic task of hiding away as many of the children that she could find. She hid them in the closets and cupboards of her room, may I add she did this knowing that any second a gunman could burst through the door, talk about added pressure. She managed to hide every last child under her watch before the gunman, whose name I do know it’s just that I don’t believe in giving credit to the people that orchestrate such horrific events, burst through the door demanding to know where the children were. To this she answer, “In the gym.” those were the last life saving words she’d ever spoke. The gunman shot her and moved on.

The last selfless action taken by Victoria Soto, not only saved all the children in that room, but also gave the other teachers more time to hide their students so that they could live another day. I guess the reason I admire Victoria Soto so much is 1.) I’d never be able to think that fast, in that situation I’d be too scared to think, and 2.) Just the fact that she knew most likely she was going die protecting though kids and not caring about her own safety. And I'd hope that if I were ever in a situation like that I'd be able to help others just like she did.

  16. One person I admire is Mark Zuckerberg, he created Facebook, even though it isnt a great social networking website, he still designed it when he was in his 20s. He was a billionaire by the time he was 23. He is a great businessmen man. He always is looking for business plans to increase his profit in facebook even more. Weather it is ads by google, or it is opening stocks to the public for facebook, he is always looking to make money. Facebook has an army of workers to make sure everything is always functioning. He does not want one error in the coding, even though that is probably impossible, he will try to have little to none.

Zuckerberg also donates to charities. One of his most recent donations was nearly $500 million dollars, it was $18 million of his shares. This money was donated to Silicon Valley Community Foundation. This will help with education and research in health initiatives.

Zuckerberg also has a lot of pressure being one of the richest people in the U.S being one a big businessmen man and all. He recieves a lot of crap from paparazzi invading his personal life. That would be really stressful to deal with, when you are just trying to have a relaxing day. He also has to think about anything he publishes to the internet very thoroughly, anything that can easily be worded differently will be, this has to be stressful.

Besides all of the stress Mark Zuckerberg deals with he still manages to make money, which he donates a lot of it to charity which is why I admire him. If he did not donate to charity most of that money would probably be going to waste. These are the reasons why I admire Mark Zuckerberg.

  17. The young person I admire the most is Bethany Hamilton. She was born February 8, 1990 in Lihue, Hawaii. Bethany is a professional surfer. She is known for surviving a shark attack in which her left arm was bitten off, and for overcoming the injury to return to professional surfing. She has appeared on many television shows since she lost her arm.

On October 31, 2003, at the age of 13, Hamilton went for a morning surf along with her best friend, Alana, and Alana's father and brother. Around 7:30 a.m., she was lying on her surfboard with her left arm dangling in the water, when a 14 to 15 foot tiger shark attacked her. It ripped off her left arm just below the shoulder. The Blanchards helped paddle her back to shore. She was rushed to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. By the time she got there she had lost over 60% of her blood. Her father was supposed to have a knee surgery that morning, but she took his place in the operating room. She then spent seven more days in recovery at the hospital.

Even with how much trauma the incident caused Hamilton was determined to Keep surfing. Less than one month after the incident, she returned to her board. Initially, she adopted a custom-made board that was a little thicker and longer, and it had for her right arm, so it was easier to paddle, and she learned to kick more to make up for the loss of her left arm. After teaching herself to surf with one arm, on January 10, 2004, she entered a major competition. She now uses standard competitive performance short-boards.

She now has had a movie named Soul Surfer and autobiography published. She is also nationally ranked. I think she is inspiring because she has had to overcome so much to do what she loves. It makes injuries I have had look so small. She has so much determination and perseverance.

  18. The person that inspired me the most in my life was my brother, A.C. he had a genetic disease called Aromatic-L amino acid decarboxylase deficiency. That is when the neurotransmitters do not produce enough seratonin and dopamine. This caused him to not be able to walk, communicate properly, eat, and other complications. In order to get his nutrients he had a feeding tube that had to be cleaned often.

My mom and dad had to bring him to hospitals that were quite a ways away for his surgeries . All the surguries and him not being able to communicate must have been so frustrating. Not being able to walk where you want would have made me crazy. Throughout his disease and struggles he still managed to keep his head up and smile. His laugh and smile could brighten up your day.

He inspires me to become a doctor and maybe even one day I can advance the research and medicine to give kids like him a better chance because I know that I would do anything to just spend more time with him. My mom and dad inspire me as well because they did everything to make the short time my brother had on earth a good one. Having to learn everything you can about the disease and how to fix his tubing and all the medication he had to take. It is very hard to watch your kid grow up, go into many surgeries, and know that he wont live like every other kid and enjoy life.
I like to think that he's up in heaven running everywhere he can and doing all the things he liked on earth and even more he wasn't able to do. One day we will meet again andIi hope its as good as it was the first time.

  19. The person that I look up to is my brother Andrew. I was always looking up to him when I was a little kid and I still look up to him today. He is the person that I look up to.

When we ware little kids he would always play a game with me. We always did what I wanted to do. We would always go out back and play with these toy tractors. On other days he would push me around on these giant toy tractors. He would also give me rides in the wagon on the back of the lawnmower. One day we ware back in the woods messing around and I got hurt and could not walk so he carried me all the way back to the house.

When I got older he taught me how to drive four wheelers and dirt bikes. He taught me how to be safe while I am on one. Now a days he shows me how to do tricks and new places to drive. He helped me figure out what I like to do in my free time and still today he shows me new tricks to do. I look up to him because he pushed me to go new places and do new stuff on my four wheeler. Now I make my own trails and do stuff that he doesn’t do on his four wheeler.

For Christmas my dad got me a dirt dike so now I can’t wait to see what new tricks he shows me on the dirt bike. I also can’t wait to see some of the new trails he shows me. This is why I look up to my brother today. I am so happy that I know him and am related to him.
